Server resources are available that provide remote access to applications and high performance computing assets in both Windows and Linux environments. Access is available to faculty, staff, and graduate students. Access to undergraduates is available when requested by faculty for either research or instructional needs.
Shared Systems
We provide two main remote computing environments using Windows and Linux operating systems. These systems fit a majority of needs. To find out more about each, use the links below.
- Linux Environment (compute.cla cluster)
- Documentation (how to get an account, connect, and use)
- Windows Environment
- Windows Documentation (how to get an account, connect, and use)
- Connecting to CLA Research Desktops by LATIS (formerly wts.umn.edu)
Not sure which one to use? Check out our Linux or Windows page.
Custom Systems
If you find that using shared systems doesn't meet your needs we can work with you to create custom solutions. We also run systems that support administrative and instructional needs. Simply contact us to begin the conversation. Examples of custom systems we've created and/or support:
Instruction
- Rstudio Server
- JupyterHub
- Jamulus
Administrative
- CLA Workflow HR - Hiring
- Joan assistant (IoT device)
- Uniflow (print server)
- Networked License Servers
- FileMaker Server

Databases
Often research systems need an associated database. We can provision and connect your system to MySQL, MS SQL, or Oracle SQL databases hosted by OIT database hosting. We can also create and host PostgreSQL databases.
Storage
We can help you request and connect systems to University provided storage systems.
